CHAPTER SIXTEEN

'I suppose he told you he wasn't sleeping with Adele Mason?' Dee Raeburn said. She showed the detectives into her living room. Then she stopped abruptly and gestured for Miller and Watt to sit down.

They sat next to each other on the settee while Dee stood looking at them.

'We're just going over the background again,' Miller said.

'Why? Why now? Because of that little tramp being found dead? If he wasn't locked up, I would say he had murdered her too.'

It hadn't been revealed publicly about the watch being found on her, but Miller didn't think that would remain a secret for long. The YouTubers had been warned not to reveal that detail but he didn't hold out much hope.

'She was linked to your brother-in-law, yes,' Watt said. 'Only because she was a babysitter for them.'

At last Dee sat down. 'Babysitter? She was all round whore, sergeant. Young Adele had a reputation for sleeping with older men. I don't doubt for one second he was giving her one.' She looked at them. 'You want coffee?'

'No thanks,' Miller replied for both of them. 'What makes you so sure he was sleeping with her?'

'Becky told me. She found used condoms in the bathroom. She was on the pill and they didn't use condoms. Becky thought he was coming home and sleeping with Adele when they were both supposed to be out.'

'Do you think Adele had anything to do with your sister's disappearance?'

'Who knows? I didn't like her. I only met her a few times. Cocky little bitch, so she was. Typical of somebody who comes from money; it's like Victorian times all over again. What would her motive have been though?'

'So she could have Becky's husband all to herself,' Watt said.

'She was just a teenager back then, if I remember correctly.'

'She was. Still, some teenagers do strange things for love.'

'Let me ask you, inspector; do you believe McIver is innocent?'

'As a law enforcement officer, I can't speculate on that.'

Watt sat up straighter. 'We obviously know that McIver was in prison when Adele was murdered, so we have to find out who else would want to harm her.'

'It's a shame she went down that road. Disrespecting her father the way she did. She was a smart girl and could have done anything she wanted with her life. What a waste.'

'She had a friend who she called Lord Snooty. Have you ever heard of anybody by that name?'

'As I said, I haven't seen her for years. God knows what would have become of my brother-in-law had he continued his relationship with that girl. But he's in the right place.'

'You believe he killed your sister?' Miller said.

'Of course I do. Women don't just walk out on their children. She left everything behind and there's been no sight of her since.'

'Some women do,' Watt said.

'What?' Dee looked at him like he'd brought something in on the sole of his shoe.

'Some women leave it all behind to go with a lover. Some even kill their kids. It does happen.
